It was like entering an ancient Greek or Roman Goddess Temple. The Goddess Artemis is at the very front of the entrance of this beautiful and mystical locale known as Untermyer Conservancy Gardens, in Yonkers, New York.
Once inside, you are greeted by a water fountain and canopy of trees. There are long water gardens, with all sorts of flowers, including a lotus pond. Off in the distance are two pillars, with a sphinx on either side, which are set in front of an ancient-looking arena with concrete seats and tiled flooring. Off to the side of this huge place is a Roman-style circular temple-like structure with a beautiful overlook of the Hudson.
There were two actual ancient Roman pillars lower down from the park. There is also a Temple of Love, on the other side of the park. I spent much of my time on this visit in the Walled Garden. It was filled with delights that seemed to fit with the Goddess and Public History theme!
This very special place is The Untermyer Gardens Conservancy. It is dedicated to the revitalization of Samuel Untermyer's once great gardens, now a city municipal park in Yonkers, New York.
