The Goddess and Public History

The National Museum of the American Indian, George Gustav Heye Center, is part of the Smithsonian, which also has a location in Washington. It is located in a very grand and palatial building with marble floors and towering columns. It has two or three exhibits going on at the time and also a collection room that is packed with artifacts from Native American cultures. But there are also ancient artifacts from indigenous tribes.

 

I found at least three goddesses represented among the long show-cases of the Heye collection. I share the photos here.

 

If you stop in to see them, it is worth a visit to the "Native New York" exhibit. It is rich in information all New Yorkers should know: Our lands were once their lands, and different tribes lived and dwelled in different areas. Queens, Brooklyn, Long Island, and Manhattan, and all areas of the state, represent very specific native lands. The Lenape lived in Manhattan and other areas, but they were booted out of the state and now dwell in Oklahoma and other areas.

That exhibit also discussed the importance of Clan Mothers.
